Ultraviolet rays: Among the Hazard of Working in Antarctic

Washington: Ultraviolet overexposure is among the hazards of working in the harsh environment, according to a new study. The study by the Antarctic Division (AAD) and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, found that 80 percent of the subjects received excess solar ultra violet radiation, and 31 percent received more than five times a limit. During the summer of 2004-05 and 2006-07, there was a research undertaken that measured sun exposure on workers who were unloading vessels at Australia’s three Antarctic stations. They included ship personnel, barge operators, other than scientists who wore UVR sensitive badges on their chests for the working day duration. Jeff Ayton, chief medical officer of AAD said that despite of the sun protection that was provided to the workers, about 70 percent of them were reported feeling sun burnt. “It is not only the short-term health effects like sunburn we must worry about, we also need to think about the long term effects of ...

Ignoring the proper usage of hazardous materials can have disastrous consequences. It is therefore, important that the employees know how to recognize these potentially dangerous substances, how to properly handle them safely and how to dispose them correctly. For the regulation of handling hazardous waste, the EPA created the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) in 1976. In the year 1986, OSHA was given the responsibility to protect the employees who work with the hazardous materials and waste (HAZMAT). What is HAZWOPER Training all about

HAZWOPER training is a safety program which is created by the government to ensure the safety of workers who handle hazardous materials at their workplace. The training also teaches them what should be done if there is any accident involving hazardous substance. The evolution of the idea Hazwoper training was through the creation of several different governmental agencies. In the year 1976, the Environmental Protection Agency created a group which was known as the Resource Conservation Act. The purpose behind the formation of the act was to regulate the handling of hazardous waste. With the passing years, the government knew that they need to do more to protect individuals who worked with the hazardous materials. OSHA created a new regulation in late 1980s which was known as Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER). Formally the new set of standards was put in place in 1990. These changes were made when a worker commented on the current training system whic...

Workplace Development Programs To Provide Green Job Training

EPA has selected OAI Incorporation to get $500,000 in grant funding which would make employees trained for accessing and cleaning up of brownfield sites. This program would consist of 98 hours of training followed by other 168 hours of environmental training or 96 hours of energy conservation training. The participants who get successful graduated from this program would receive certifications in OSHA Construction and hazardous waste operations and emergency response. From past many years EPA has awarded more than $25 million in brown fields jobs. Out of which 5000 people have completed training in EPA with around 3000 getting jobs into environmental fields. Personal Protective Equipment And Hazwoper

Equipments such as hardhats, respirators are the things which might stand out between a worker and serious injury. The correct Personal Protective Equipment, the training to use it and a comprehensive safety program are the components of personal protective equipment as said by 40 Hour Hazwoper program. The Right Equipment The first step to provide proper training is to choose a proper PPE for the worker and job. OSHA has a minimum requirement for PPE which needs to be met and they are in line with 40 Hour Hazwoper Training. For example the equipment to be used by Hazwoper needs to be durable and capable of being disinfected and would be marked only to identify the manufacturer. Those PPE which doesn’t meet OSHA specifications need not be used. This PPE should be appropriate to the job, wherein the dust masks issued to the employees who need full respirators is not a appropriate response. If a job requires respirators then only respirators need to be provided and not any other substit...

Points To Measure A Potential Hazwoper Trainer

Hazwoper training is one of the most demanded training in terms of environmental health and safety. OSHA provides Hazwoper Training Curriculum Guidelines to be followed but these are not enforceable. A trainer should always meet the OSHA guidelines to instruct the employees about the subject one is having. Word of mouth or other recommendations are fine in analyzing a potential trainer. But the most efficient way to measure Hazwoper training is through the 10 points or elements which have been described below: Model Program: Everyone provides Hazwoper “train-the-trainer” program but many provide model programs which are one step above this training programs. Apprentice training may not be involved in train-the trainer program wherein one trainer learns under another trainer. The best train-the trainer program covers training techniques, including methods for adult learners in addition to detailed lectures and hands on work with technical and regulatory subjects. Courses vary in length....

To provide training to employees managers need to be smart on ways to spend. When the sales budget of department gets reduced it means one has to evaluate costs and decide what can be cut. For a training division it means reduction of course frequency or cancelling some courses completely. But if you want your employer’s to enroll into training programs you need to evaluate and decide which courses are critical and which are optional. OSHA requires that the employees at least gets trained into 40 Hour Hazwoper Training which is very much essential and basic step towards employees safety. Employees working at hazardous waste site who often use Personal Protective Equipments (PPE) or often exposed to hazards which are excess in terms of OSHA’s Permissible Exposure Limit(PEL) should take 40 hour HAZWOPER General Site Course. But workers who won’t use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and whose exposure is within the proposed limit of OSHA should take 24 hour Hazwoper Worker Site Course. Supervisors within the same criteria must take appropriate 24 or 40 hour HAZWOPER Training plus 8 Hour Hazardou...
