HAZWOPER training is a safety program which is created by the government to ensure the safety of workers who handle hazardous materials at their workplace. The training also teaches them what should be done if there is any accident involving hazardous substance.

In the year 1976, the Environmental Protection Agency created a group which was known as the Resource Conservation Act. The purpose behind the formation of the act was to regulate the handling of hazardous waste. With the passing years, the government knew that they need to do more to protect individuals who worked with the hazardous materials. OSHA created a new regulation in late 1980s which was known as Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER). Formally the new set of standards was put in place in 1990. These changes were made when a worker commented on the current training system which was vague.
