OSHA’s decision to revise the hazard communication is perhaps the most noteworthy rulemaking efforts over the decades. This decision has been made to ally it with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) of the United Nation.
Though, not finalized yet, the rulemaking would affect over 5 millions of businesses and over 120 employees across the country. Under the new proposal, over 40 million employees would have to go under safety training on hazard communication. The estimated annualized compliance costs would be almost 100 million dollars for employers but the estimated annualized benefits are approximately $850 million.

There is a broad scope of the proposed rule and already all employers are now encouraged to familiarize with the requirements and participate in the process of the rulemaking. They are requested to send their comments to OSHA by 29 of this December.
Existing hazard communication standard of OSHA
The existing hazard communication standard is one of the most important rules in the country when it comes to hazardous chemicals in worksites. Some of the things required by them are- chemical manufacturers must evaluate the chemical produced and determine whether they are hazardous. Employers must have hazard communication program and train their employees on the hazards of the chemical.
OSHA had developed the hazard communication standard almost 30 years ago and a number of countries have passed the rule that would perform a similar function but it contains different requirements especially on how the main hazard information is communicated. This has resulted in the chemical manufacturers who shipped the products internationally to navigate different and complex hazard communication laws.
In order to solve this problem and merge with the international differences, the GHS was created with the support of the United Nations. Now OSHA has proposed to change its hazard communication rules to act along with the GHS and an attempt to come within the sphere of this international effort.
