Get Rid of Hazardous Wastes Safely

Over a period of time many old, out-of-date and seldom used chemicals gets piled up in the basement, garages and cupboards. With time, containers begin to deteriorate and their labels fade. If the products are not being used then it should be given to someone who will use them or it is better to dispose hazardous chemicals legally and safely.

Cleaners, Detergents and Bleach:

According to the University of Mexico Extension Service, small quantities of these products can be diluted with water and safely flushed down the drain. They warn not to mix products that contain bleach with cleaners which contain ammonia. These two chemicals interact and becomes toxic, potentially a deadly gas.
Disposal of Aerosol Cans:

Contents of aerosol cans are under pressure and can explode. Aerosol cans should be thrown away only when they are completely empty. Ohio State of University publishes a fact sheet for how to dispose household wastes. It is suggested to empty an aerosol can by turning the can upside down and then spraying the contents onto newspapers or cardboard in a well-ventilated area till the product and the propellant are completely gone. After that roll the can in a newspaper and then throw it in trash.

Disposal of Acids:

There are some caustic products such as drain openers and some cleaning products that contain corrosive acids. These chemicals can be threat to human health and to the environment. They should not be ever disposed down the drain. The safe way to dispose these chemicals is by using them according to the given directions on the package.
