Columbus, Ohio There was gas leak at oil recycling company, and about 4,000 workers were forced to evacuate nearby office buildings for six hours on Monday, sending one person to the hospital, according to the authorities.

Firefighters who had arrived at Heartland Petroleum LLC saw cloud of gas over the company, said Battalion Chief David Whiting.

The cloud, which quickly dispersed, was a mixture of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide, based on the information that was provided by the company, said Whiting.

Because of the flammable properties of hydrogen, emergency responders ordered the evacuation of nearby offices.

Heartland Petroleum is a part of a large industrial development area that is near Port Columbus International Airport. Workers at DSW Inc. shoe warehouse was among those who were sent home.

Two people for minor breathing problems were treated at the scene, and the third who complained of the same malady was sent to the hospital, Whiting said. No additional information on the patient was released.

The cause of the gas leak remained under investigation; the problem appeared to be related to a faulty gasket on one role of the oil tanks, said Whiting.

The chief financial officer at Heartland Petroleum, Brad Lambert said; the problem started when there was power cut early in the morning. And when the power was restored, it caused a surge in the computer system and blew the gasket.

The company hoped to resume the operations by the end of the week, said Lambert.

The U. S Occupational Safety and Health Administration had sent a team at the site. The agency has six months to complete an investigation, said an assistant area director in Columbus, David Wilson.

Washington: Ultraviolet overexposure is among the hazards of working in the harsh environment, according to a new study.

The study by the Antarctic Division (AAD) and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, found that 80 percent of the subjects received excess solar ultra violet radiation, and 31 percent received more than five times a limit.

During the summer of 2004-05 and 2006-07, there was a research undertaken that measured sun exposure on workers who were unloading vessels at Australia’s three Antarctic stations.

They included ship personnel, barge operators, other than scientists who wore UVR sensitive badges on their chests for the working day duration.

Jeff Ayton, chief medical officer of AAD said that despite of the sun protection that was provided to the workers, about 70 percent of them were reported feeling sun burnt.

“It is not only the short-term health effects like sunburn we must worry about, we also need to think about the long term effects of UVR - such as increased risk of damage to the skin and eyes,” Ayton said.

According to the study the extended duration of the sunlight in Polar Regions, ozone hole and reflection off the ice and water has contributed to the levels of UVR exposure.

“Research findings help us to ensure we provide the most appropriate information and equipment to protect the health and safety of those living and working at our stations,” Sandra Hodgson, the occupational health and safety manager of AAD said.

Houston (Reuters): On Friday, at the request of the U.S. Chemical Safety Board and the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Silver Eagle Refining agreed to shut down its 10, 250 barrel per day (bpd) Woods Cross, Utah refinery, said by the company in a statement.

As a part of a probe of November 4 explosion at the plant the CSB investigators at the refinery found widespread safety problems. The refinery is located 10 miles north of Salt Lake City.

The explosion knocked out power to other area refineries, leading to the widespread of criticism of Silver Eagle. The explosion damaged dozens of nearby homes.

"Over the past days, the CSB team has developed a number of serious concerns about the integrity of the piping and equipment at various locations in the plant," Bresland said. "These concerns include a lack of documentation that is required and a lack of needed calculations of the fitness for service of various pieces of equipment."

Earlier CSB investigators had announced that they have found November 4 blast was an explosion of hydrogen gas released when a 10 inch pipe burst.

The pipe "showed some evidence of significant thinning which had not been detected by the refinery's mechanical integrity program," Bresland said.

The refinery shut some of its units following the explosion. The other units will also be shut the company said. Only after the repairs and safety inspections gets complete the refinery will start.

Franklin Non-Ferrous Foundry, Inc. has been cited by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for 17 alleged serious and willful violations of agency standards. OSHA states that Granite State employers face a total of$254,000 in fines following comprehensive OSHA inspection began in April of this year.

Franklin Non-Ferrous Foundry, in Franklin, NH, is casts bronze, brass and aluminum alloys into products that range from 4 oz up to 230 lb.

Rosemarie Ohar, OSHA’s New Hampshire area director said the foundry’s most serious violations involve “absence or inadequate protections for workers whose duty exposes them to airborne concentrations of lead.” She recounted the health hazards related to the exposure of lead, including serious damage to the nervous, circulatory, urinary and reproductive systems.

OSHA concluded that Franklin Non-Ferrous did not provide biological monitoring that is required for the workers, who are exposed to lead in the course of their duties nor were properly fit- test and ensure adequate respiratory for them.

The Foundry has been cited many times for similar violations over the past decade according to OSHA. Following the recent inspections, OSHA had issued three willful citations with $210,000 in proposed fines.

Franklin Non- Ferrous is cited for 14 serious citations by the OSHA for lead contaminated and damaged respirators, outdated lead-compliance program, also for various confined forklift, machine guarding, forklift and electrical hazards. These citations carry fine of $44,000

Franklin Non-Ferrous after receipt of the citations was given15 business days and proposed penalties to comply, participate in an informal conference with the area director of OSHA, or contest the citations before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

Having an instinct to make world green place to live in , the residents of city graduated from a training program on how to restore the properties called “brownfields” for productive usage.
